The Metropoli’s Cultural Centre constitutes a network of venues that strengthen and promote artistic-cultural activities implemented by Fundación Metropoli – Indonesia as part of its plan of development projects.

Aim
The complex cultural makeup of the Indonesian archipelago represents a unique phenomenon; all the islands share an identical cultural base that is enriched and modified by local interaction. As in many parts of the world the real-life situation is currently under threat from market forces and is therefore in a dangerous predicament.
The presence and major influence of artistic-cultural expression in the normal life of a population affords each society its unique nature. The disappearance of such expressions, which are clearly under threat in today’s world, may lead to a loss of the features that identify a particular group. This phenomenon is primarily evident in the most disadvantaged social strata.
In a region where the population survives by “promoting” its cultural identity, any loss of identity would not only represent a social problem but also an obvious economic threat.
This is why Fundación Metropoli-Indonesia is currently working on the implementation of a Metropoli Cultural Centre in the Regency of Karangasem, in the east of Bali. This is the foundation’s pilot project in Indonesia.
Metropoli Cultural Centre
We conceived of the Metropolis’s Cultural Centre as a cultural project principally aimed at promoting traditional and contemporary expressions of Indonesian culture, which is targeted at local children and is incorporated in the community.
The Metropolis’s Cultural Centre is firstly a cultural experiment. It intends to study three specific functions: the promotion of artistic expression, reflection on the same artistic expressions and preservation of the tangible and intangible artistic wealth generated via the two previous points.
The Metropolis’s Cultural Centre is primarily targeted towards children from disadvantaged backgrounds, representing the group that is most in danger of losing its cultural identity.
This Cultural Centre has been set up as an institution run by the community and helped by Fundación Metropoli Indonesia’s organisational and financial support. The community should identify with and consider the centre its own.
It’s prioritises local cultural values, human resources and the work and contribution of its assistants.
